WHITENED MAPLE

Our whitened maple is plain sawn American hard maple which is finished first with a natural white-tinted oil manufactured in Germany and top coated with our normal natural linseed oil and pine resin varnish blend.

As you may know, unfinished American hard maple is extremely dense and smooth in a lovely natural whitish color with subtle pink/brown grain streaks. Normally when it's finished with a "clear" top coat, like our oil/varnish or our satin polyurethane, it turns a much less lovely, slightly cheesy yellow. Not timeless, not DoubleButtery. To prevent this and to preserve the natural whiteness without obscuring the subtle grain, we start with the white oil which keeps the subsequent protective top coats from affecting the underlying awesomeness. It works brilliantly if we do say so ourselves.

The insides of case goods (credenzas and dressers and the like) made with our whitened maple are top-coated with natural shellac.
