MDF

Our MDF is medium density fiberboard, an engineered wood panel made by combining wood fibers from western US and Canadian softwoods with adhesives under high pressure and heat. We ultimately picked the specific MDF we use for its exceptionally smooth surface and homogenous core, both of which are key to the smashing good looks—think lightly tanned leather—of our line of MDF seating.

But the remarkable consistency of the finished product was really a happy accident. We first considered this particular brand of MDF because of its sustainability and indoor air quality profile. It's high in recycled wood content and very low in formaldehyde (it's fully California Air Resources Board [CARB] compliant and provides LEED credits for recycled material use).

The line of Roadrunner chairs and stools we manufacture with MDF are finished with dewaxed natural shellac as a sanding sealer and top coated with a satin polyurethane. The seat pans are reinforced with welded and black powder-coated steel brackets.
